Continuing our exploration of ducklings and the remarkable journey they face, today we shift our focus to the future – the exciting vision for Freedoms Purchase Ranch (FPR). Inspired by the unwavering guidance of a mother duck and the resilience of her offspring, we’re building a sanctuary specifically designed to support veterans.
Thriving Through Nature:
Mother ducks are not just protectors, they’re also expert teachers, leading their young to abundant feeding grounds. Similarly, FPR aims to harness the therapeutic power of nature. We envision programs and activities that allow veterans to reconnect with the outdoors, fostering a sense of peace, well-being, and community. A growing body of research suggests that spending time in nature can have significant benefits for veterans’ mental health. A 2019 study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found that time in nature can reduce stress hormones and improve mood in veterans with PTSD (Study on nature and veterans’ PTSD).
Building Confidence and Independence:
As ducklings mature, they gain independence under their mother’s watchful eye. FPR envisions offering programs and opportunities that empower veterans to develop essential life skills and regain a sense of self-reliance. This could include vocational training, peer support groups, and access to mental health resources.
A Haven for Healing:
Drawing inspiration from the duckling’s journey, FPR aspires to be a haven for healing. We envision a supportive environment where veterans can connect with nature, share stories, and find solace in a community that understands their unique experiences.
