Our Mission
Freedom’s Purchase Ranch is a sovereign social enterprise operating on 7.53 acres in Pound, Virginia. Our mandate — Independence as a Replicable System (IaaRS) — is to build and prove a model that transforms trauma, homelessness, and dependency into lasting self-sufficiency, then export that blueprint nationwide.
Every product sold through Nature Heals and the Ridge Collection directly funds Phase II construction on the Ranch.
Four Principles
- Sovereignty — Residents own their trajectory. No dependency loops, no institutional hand-holding past the point of capability.
- Restoration — Land, body, and community heal together. Permaculture, food forests, and trauma-informed support are one integrated system.
- Replication — Every decision is documented for export. What works at FPR can be rebuilt anywhere in America within 18 months.
- Accountability — Current Social Return on Investment: 7.2:1. We measure everything and publish the numbers.
Where We Stand: Phase II
Land secured. 7.53 acres in Pound, VA — deeded, fenced, and operational. Phase I is complete.
Phase II is underway:
- Ridge Nexus — Central hub structure for community gathering, skills training, and operations.
- Cottage — First permanent resident housing unit.
- Food Forest — Perennial food production system planted and establishing.
Nature Heals botanicals and the Ridge Collection apparel line are the primary revenue engine funding this build.
The Origin
The concept was born during the pandemic, when founder Michael Baird and his wife Abbe lost their home and spent months living in their RV. During that period, Michael’s friendship with Rich “Doc” Hendrzak — a 100% combat-disabled veteran — crystallized the vision: not a charity, but a system. A place where people like Doc, who had given everything, could rebuild on their own terms.
Doc’s resilience in navigating PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and the bureaucratic maze of veteran services became the founding proof-of-concept: if the right environment and the right tools exist, people heal themselves.
The Ranch is that environment. The tools are being built now.
Support the Build
The land is secured. The mission is funded by commerce, not charity. Buy a shirt. Buy a salve. The margin goes to the Ridge.
